Writing essays since the early 90’s, these missives found in “Because You Never Asked” are but a cross section of work that is still in progress today. Grapel considers them therapeutic objections to the paradigm of our culture and the negativity it is leading us into. “All cultures attempt to inculcate their constituents into someone’s narrow-minded, self-serving version of reality and this book is an attempt to translate these subterfuges into the truth,” he says. Although several of his earliest essays are included in this collection, the vast majority of them are contemporary. Regardless of the chronology, you will find they remain pertinent to whatever is happening around us at this moment.

Jerome Grapel is an essayist in the finest tradition of an art form that, unfortunately, is often overlooked or ignored in today’s society. His Book, "Because you Never Asked" covers a wide range contemporary subjects. The style is biting, cynical, funny, outraged and - even if one doesn’t agree with everything - what is being said is always interesting. Jerome Grapel compares favorably with essayists like Huxley, Emerson, and Swift. So if you are not completely happy with today’s events; if you find that gridlock, corporate rule, and religious meddling are starting to rankle and intrude on your general well-being; if you are experiencing a sinking degree of unease with what’s going on today; "Because You Never Asked" might very well articulate and give voice to what is causing that unease. It’s a pleasure to recommend this book. Sincerely, Joel BiddleProduct details

Because You Never Asked Book One Jerome Grapel 9780615996356 Books Reviews
Having been sentenced to be a "talker" as a result of genetic linkage to and early childhood nurture by my Italian immigrant grandparents, I have gradually learned to become a "listener" partly by interacting with Jerry Grappel over the past 25 or more years. I have strongly encouraged most people I know-those who may be aligned with Jerry's philosophies as well as the majority who are probably maligned-to read Because You Never Asked and to "listen" closely. This self-proclaimed "chicken soup philosopher" possesses a depth of knowledge, intuition, sarcasm and cynicism which he articulates both seriously and humorously. If readers can muster up what it takes to be brutally honest with themselves, they may just find themselves in total agreement with many of Jerry's hilarious philosophical rants! Listen! Enjoy!
Even if you disagree with some of Jerome Grapel's philosophy, this book of short essays is very thought provoking. An excellent read.
Very entertaining. A different point of view. A new perspective.
I found it insightful and cutting edge. A good read.
A straight talking book of essays that cuts directly to the core of many issues that are troubling, debatable, and sometimes humorous. These are common sense things that most of us never give a notice to or second thought. However, the author carefully dissects them in a clear, concise, and understandable approach. The author is not afraid to "call it like it is" and is not worried about offending anyone or anything mentioned in any of his essays. Let me be clear that I do not necessarily agree with everything the author criticizes, explains, or proposes, but I enjoyed this compilation of essays. I look forward to reading "Book Two" should it appear.
Although the author and I have divergent political views, I must say that I enjoyed reading this book for several reasons. First of all it is written in an entertaining way with flashes of humor, both subtle and direct. The essays themselves, are chock full of opinion, which though a bit to the left of mine, are nonetheless thought provoking. In fact, the author may have made so much sense that even I may reconsider some of my views....maybe! But seriously, this book contains some wonderful insights from a man I know to be honorable and upright who writes these essays with the passion of a Hemingway. Reading this book will certainly cause you to look at our world in way you probably have not considered.
As a Post Consumer Man fan of many years I'm delighted to see his first book of essays published, and hope that they finally reach the wider audience they deserve. Writing about politics, sports, the media, or pop culture, Jerry Grapel brings an original slant to run-of-the-mill proceedings, some that made headlines, and others that never saw the limelight. They all capture his attention equally. Whether jaundiced, cynical, amused or, more often -- bemused, Grapel provides an incisive and often counter-intuitive take on whatever issue finds itself under his laser-like gaze. You may not always agree with him, but you'll surely pause and think -- and in the process, be entertained.
